Yes, it's true. As I have worked to get a presence on FB, Etsy, Artstack and Saatchi, I have run out of internet posting patience. It can be exhausting all this sitting and typing on a flickering screen - and with my particular visual problems - painful.I often end up in bed with a powerful headache, too drained to blog.

And yet Blogspot is where I feel most comfortable; where those who stop by are more like to look closely, read and interact in more than just a superficial manner (as on FB). I've met some wonderful people here over the years and I want to maintain those relationships and continue to meet new folks.

So even though I am a visual artist by trade, writing helps me to work out what I really think. It forces me to organize my thoughts and understand the "whys" of things and thoughts and opinions, not just the "whats." And finally, here on Blogspot (and WordPress) there is such a wealth of talented people who write, paint, photograph, or perform and whose creativity inspires and delights. I love that we are each others audience.

Commission: Lady Godiva -Triumphant . 60 x 36 acrylic on canvas

This commission occupied me on and off for the past several months; researching, drawing, making changes and finally completing this large ode to classicism and symbolism. No head bowed and posture cowed Godiva here. She sits relaxed and confident upon her powerful steed, her scepter symbolizing her great heart and love of life. In her left hand she clutches a rose, her representation of rebirth.

Installed in client's home.

The background depicts landmarks from the client's home region: a rushing river, a particular mountain, distant vineyards and vegetation - all meaningful to her. I loved painting the prancing free rein horse and doing a figure study was quite a change of pace for me! I really hated covering up the wonderful job I did painting the left breast - ah well - propriety won out...

No post is complete without a cat picture... so here is my latest foster failure, Stratton, aka Bratty Stratty. She is actually very sweet except she's at that stage where feets under the sheets are wa-ay too tempting. She's half Siamese, has one slightly crossed eye and chronic sinusitis - which is why she's ended up staying with me,
there. "What is there" has been on occasion, a manifestation of
something or someone unpleasant, like an ex-husband's haunting
expression of scorn or superiority (hah - see photos). Painting it out
works just like talking it out. I can rid myself of certain mental junk
by examining and portraying what is in my mind's eye. When I can
hold it in my hand, I have power over the image, memory, mood - and I
can literally put it aside for later scrutiny, laugh at it, or banish it altogether! The power of
symbolism is extraordinary!
This past Sunday I attended an artist's reception for Verle Mickish at the Sautee-Nacoochee Center Galleries. Verle is a featured artist for the first show of 2015. I'd seen the exhibit the day before as it was my regular volunteer day - and the best part of being there the day before was meeting Verle and his charming wife of 69 years, Ginny. They came by to see how the show had been hung and to take a few photographs. I was able to spend a hour chatting about life, art, and being an aging artist who is losing his sight. Sadly Verle has lost most of his vision to macular degeneration. But as you will see, he's still painting! And his humor and zest for life remain intact.

Ginny and Verle are obviously devoted to one another. They are vibrant
and funny and a joy to hand out with. Ginny and I are now FB friends so I'll
sharing this post to her and all of their friends.

I'd never heard of Verle Mickish - and it's likely you haven't either, but there are literally thousand and thousands of incredible artists out there who just keep making great art so whenever there's an opportunity to see works from 50+ years as a painter, illustrator and educator, I don't think one should pass! Over 90 works are exhibited.
My surprise stems partly from the fact that I'm often thinking about blogging - but apparently not actually blogging! I enjoy the outlet and the effort of trying to post worthwhile or interesting bits, sharing my art and getting to know other bloggers and followers. I'm embarrassed. And thus, I hereby vow to post at least weekly unless I am at death's door or .... (can't think of another excuse).

One reason I've not been around is (yuck) Facebook. That's where the love/hate thing is coming from. Last year I met and spoke with Bradley Tyler Wilson, (his small and wackily charming bird paintings are below) at an area art exhibit and sale. He asked me if I did FB and I made a face and said no. In less than 5 minutes he convinced me I should do it - and use it strictly as a professional tool. It's taken me weeks and weeks to figure out how to have a personal profile AND a page. I just couldn't get the hang of it. Not sure I have even now, but it's done. I still think it's confusing and unless I get, say, a gazillion "likes", I still have to post everything in both places or it's just sitting there. The only real advantage I see at this point is quick access to lots of my work for FB people.
I have to admit to being distracted by finding old friends, lost friends, acquaintances and family members there, as well as seeking out artist groups (a recent discovery).

So I get my photographs posted to albums on my personal profile (Patrice Young) and then I set up my page (Patrice Lynne Young as that is my on-art signature) and re-post all the photographs. Then I find I cannot change the name on the personal profile to match the page. More confusion.

To top that off, another of my online artist friends posted that FB would soon stop letting those of us who do not pay to advertise link back to FB. So what good is it to me if that is the case? If anyone reading this knows more about this, please give me a shout. Oh - nearly forgot. My FB page is here patricelynneyoung.

I aspire to have as many likes as my heroine Holly Friesen, who at this blogging has over 1500! But mostly, I hope to better understand marketing online.

And because all blog posts are better with cats: Here's Sugarbuns - adopted last year after spending her entire first 7 months in a shelter. She's all cinnamon and sugar...
I am often asked to update or makeover cabinets and furniture, but I'd never had anyone call their cabinets " a total disaster" and ask for my opinion, and then my services, as an EMT.

I had just finished a glazing/distressing job with my painting buddy Carol, and was headed out the client's drive when the interior designer who had hired us called. She said that if we weren't too far down the road, she'd like us to go back to the newly constructed home next door and offer a critique of finishes their cabinet contractor had done in the master bath and the kitchen. Apparently the results were disastrous and the homeowners distraught about what to do. As you can see from the "before" photos, the cabinets were pretty awful.
I've seen quite a few amateurish distressing and finish outcomes, but never anything so outrageously unacceptable done by a professional. I asked if the cabinet maker had been paid. When they said he was still owed a substantial sum, I told them not to pay any more until they were satisfied. If he would not or could not fix them, they should get bids on the cost the cost of refinishing and subtract that cost from the balance. I took a few photos as they indicated I might be called to give an estimate. I ended up with both "emergency" fixes.
When the cabinet maker was confronted, he first got angry - then admitted he had lost his "finisher" - and so he'd done the work himself. He admitted they were not like the sample he'd shown them (which was similar to what I did). But it's lucky I took photos, as his cooperative attitude was short lived. He had carpentry work yet to finish there, and when they called me to re-do the jobs, they warned me he might be "unpleasant." He was.

Suffice it to say, I am glad I am a rather laid back person as he kept snooping and sniping about the owners as I worked; trying to see how I did what I do and having the nerve to ask me what products I use. It's really not much about what you use, it's how you use it.
Recently I posted this 24 x 24 landscape that I had finished quickly for an event. Bringing it home and living with it a bit, I found it lacked something. A friend suggested horses, and at first I couldn't see them. But like the figures in a Harry Potter photograph or painting, they entered the frame and moved across the surface until I found them lolling there. There was a Dylan song with the line: All the tired horses in the sun, how'm I s'posed to get any riding done... Yes, these could be Dylan's horses, basking in the sunny golden grasses.
I also softened the tree's foliage. It looks complete to me now. I do love those "empty" spaces in landscape, though. I'll prolly be doing another version of this - sans equine - until I get it right, or the horses move in again.
Finished another. I really love making these and I've only two more pre-constructed - er- constructions. Can't wait to work up some new ones in different sizes and configurations. I made twenty of these 28 x 23 x 2 - and all but those last two have been sold.

I continue to love grape tendrils as additions. They are each so unique, spiraling and reaching out. They can be bouquets, branches, decorations, twigs, and even tiny trees. They are tough and paintable, and can be woven into quite strong and resilient forms. I've even made jewelry from them... (now there's a post I should do).
It was really hot, but weather stayed clear till about 4 pm when it thundered and rained for a short while before clearing again until time for load out. Good crowds who paid $30 each to attend and sample several wines made here.
There were bagpipers! About scared the fire out of me before I realized what that sound was. There's a large population of Scotch-Irish descendants hereabouts, so pipers are really popular.
The winery (Yonah Mountain Vineyards) exhibits art from Sautee Galleries, where I often show. I sold a piece out of the winery which made up my mind to attend Crush Fest as a vendor. I shared the booth with my good friend Carol - who sold 4 pieces! I would do the Fest again, even though I didn't sell anything, because I met a gallery owner who wants work - and two previous clients who want additional art! Good Day!
I posted both of these as the color is more accurate in the first one, but the focus is better in the second. I'm having a lot of focusing trouble with my little Panasonic digital. Painting is currently being shown at the Sautee-Nacoochee Galleries.
I've been working for several months now with the same client as she moved into and furnished/decorated her new home. Cynthia hired me as an artistic consultant based upon our working together several years back on projects for her former home. We had a good working relationship that has turned into friendship. I am honored that she trusts me to advise on - and then to execute many paint, finish and art projects for her.

I would never call myself a decorator. What I do is ask questions, offer courageous color options, and often just explain why something will or won't work in a given space. My philosophy of one's living space is that it should make you smile every time you enter. Serenity and comfort are important - but just feeling good in the space is paramount. I don't follow any rules, nor do I advise decorating for "resale" value. It's all about making it personal and meaningful, and understanding how our perception of our environment works physiologically gives courage to decision making.
Brand new book, found it at Dollar Tree of all places, and I figured how bad could it be? Filled with photos and way too many (for me) music facts (I listen, but am ignorant about studio musicians, processes and lists of songs) but a really good read, nonetheless. As I read, and between reading sets, I find myself singing and humming the great Simon and Garfunkel songs of my generation.
Bridge Over Troubled Waters was "my" song when I was wed many years back. And today I can't get Graceland out of my head. There are worse things to have stuck there... Just as good - only different!

When did the days get so short? Seems like I'm just getting started and it's 7 o'clock, and I'm all tired out - and hardly anything is finished! Time seems to slip on by. I know I'm not as quick - nor do I have quite the same stamina as twenty or so years back, but really!

So much yard/garden work to get done, furniture jobs to finish, house needs Spring cleaning, painting,,, and then there are the kittens I am fostering. Add to that a huge project for a local animal rescue and it's no wonder I've not been painting for myself as much as I'd like. Going to remedy that; put myself back on a schedule. Otherwise I tend to just putter in the yard, pulling up poison ivy, planting, weeding, burning brush - all the things that I can find an excuse to do because the weather is so beautiful.

Found time to finish this for the current Sautee show. Finished a couple of animal portraits, and have three more to do in the next couple of weeks as well as a commissioned landscape. So I'm busy! Just not getting to do much "personal" art.
Temps in the 70's, sun shining, daffodils blooming all around the yard - I even had a fab lunch of fresh sliced chicken breast on 9 grain bread and strawberry-rhubarb (my favorite) pie for a mid afternoon snack. I worked hard in the shop with my friend Carol, clearing out in order to make changes for re-opening.

That's a lot of good stuff in one day! And it got even better tonight, when I got a call from the director of the Sautee-Nacoochee Gallery to let me know my altar piece So Fragile A Fire is the first purchase of a special exhibit at Yonah Mountain Vineyards!

The irony is that this piece had been at another gallery for over two years at a lower price. When I picked it up, I determined not to undersell these pieces any more. I spend so much time on them compared to a "normal" painting, and I hate to let them go. I raised the price considerably, rather hoping this one would not sell so I might keep it. Lord knows, I need the money, but I think it's important to keep the ones that are most meaningful to me.
This style was very popular during the 1990's, but it is relatively expensive due to the length of time involved in constant taping and/or touch up as one color is laid next to or over another.

The client found a pair of these small dresser/side tables made in 1970 and all solid wood, painted white by someone. The piece was only $159.00! I had great fun doing this and the client loves it.
On to thrift shop adventuring!!

I am rarely able to pass up the chance to rummage about in the books
at a thrift shop or yard sale. There's just something magical to me
about finding a best loved author or a new discovery amongst the tons of
Reader's Digests and Harlequin Romance rubble.

Last week I happened to notice the word Poetry on the spine of a shabby book. Since poetry books of any kind are rare hereabouts, I eagerly pulled it out for a look. It was a 1954 Public School Library book called the first book of poetry published
by Franklin Watts, Inc., with pictures (charming line drawings) by
Kathleen Elgin and poems "selected by" Isabel J. Peterson.

I
wasn't yet in school in 1954, but I found a few of my favorite
childhood poems included along with many unfamiliar poems and authors.
And I found that the illustrator, Kathleen Elgin, was a gifted, versatile and prolific artist working throughout the 1950's and 1960's.

People often ask me where I get my ideas. When I make something, I'm not thinking of any one thing, but rather a myriad of possibilities and meanings. Of course the work should be attractive. I mean that quite literally; it should attract the viewer, drawing them in for a closer look. Varying textures, colors and style of painting contribute to making an interesting and attractive work.

But for me, the work must have meaning on another level. Often my paintings and assemblages are based upon my interpretations of natural phenomena; science and the weather. I prefer to think of them as "atmospheric". I often add quotations to the titles, or inscribe the backs with poems (sometimes my own) and quotations that are clues to what I was thinking. Sometimes I let the mystery be. I'm fine with having the viewer interpret a piece any way they wish.

Here a few shots of a commission in progress. The client wanted a cheerful transition from her kitchen to her study; something that would make her smile. The guest powder room is off this hall as well, so she wanted something pretty and noticeable. I've based the overall design on the theory of the Butterfly Effect and how it relates to spirals, whirlwinds, chaos and fractals. Thus, I have had a bit of fun making a swirly faux finish and overdressing it with vining spirals that end in colorful leaves and tendrils. The client loves birds and butterflies, and several more will be added to symbolize nature at its most ingenious.
It's been a long year. Lots of crap - but ending with much happiness, many accomplishments, contentment in creating, the promise of new friends and further adventures with old friends. I'll be heading off to Southern Illinois next week. If you see me on the road, I'll be the one doing 50 - 55 mph on the two-lanes whenever possible. I hate interstates. I hate crazies flying by me at 75 and 80 - and I hate those giant trucks that box you in or see how close they be to your bumper. I like to poke along through the small towns and see how others live, the landscape, the sky, the very atmosphere of taking a trip. It's the journey as much as the destination. See you all in 2014.
Yesterday I traded out work that had been at the Tallulah Falls
Gallery for some time. I'd forgotten that one of my altars was there
and I am pleased to have it back - for at least a while. I'm very
attached to these works, and thus far they've all sold (which surprises
me) so I've not been able to keep one. I think I'll keep to "So Fragile A Fire".
There
used to be a little balloon in certain magazines when I was growing
up. It simply stated: "I'm a little watchbird watching you." At least
that is how I remember it. I thought it was a sort of private joke.
Today, thinking how birds do sit and watch - each other; for predators, for food, for "a signal" that it is time to fly, I remembered that little illustration. As I watch them back, and paint their images, perhaps I seek to learn the signal too.
Not to say that all years, times, lives, - aren't filled with transition - but often these changes are not so obvious. Having recovered as much as possible (reaching something called PPD in medical/insurance terminology) I have had to make mental and physical adjustments to what "normal" is for me.

I've always been highly energetic, willing to go to great lengths to achieve goals, working the equivalent of two full time professions in order to have what I wanted and to be what I wanted. After my injury I found I no longer had the stamina or even the ability to work 14 to 16 hours a day, especially if on my feet. I was depressed by my body's failure to live up to my wish to be restored to my pre-injury self - and I was dismayed at trying to cope with the financial strain of being on Workman's Compensation. (For those who don't know, workman's comp pays 2/3 of whatever salary one received prior to the injury, even if the job was only part time. One is not allowed to earn other income of any sort without losing the w. comp. claim.) I'll skip the rest of that nightmare.

I returned to part time work and began painting again this past summer, and though my knee will never be the same, I am coping well. I heartily enjoyed the holidays for the first time in years and I am back to my old optimistic self. I have the Democrats of the late 1930' s and early 1940's and FDR to thank. I received my first social security check in November, and though it's not all that much, it bridges the gap between barely making it and having just a bit of discretionary income. The future's so bright I think I'll wear shades... of red, turquoise, blue, tangerine, chartreuse - every color on earth!
I've been hoping to get up to Sautee to photo the new paintings, but my work schedule - and that of the shop haven't permitted it. Been really busy, refinishing kitchen cabinets with my bud Carol, doing a chair makeover (Carol sewed up the silk-screen fabric cushion covers - look at that piping!), and finishing the rejuvenation of a side table for a client.

So I wasn't going to blog tonite, but some things just won't wait. For instance, Elvis wanted everyone to see his new nose scratch.

Elvis' ouchy

And Spooky has been pestering me to show off his rare and unusual coat. Spooky is a "sable" according to my vet, but I've never seen any cat with fur like his. In rabbits, the term agouti means varying colors on an individual hair shaft. Spooky's fur looks black, but when the fur parts, he appears to have a cream colored undercoat. His lovely coat won't be passed on, however, for Spooky boy traded his very large cahones for a forever home with endless head rubs and scratches (from me, not Elvis)
Nest time: new art.
Multi-tasking may be a popular concept, but it doesn't work for everyone (like me). In fact, I don't really believe in it. I think that what really happens is that our brains switch tasks so rapidly from one task to the next that it only appears we are doing more than one thing at a time. And if the brain fails to switch in time, one or more tasks suffer.

Last week I finished two paintings for an upcoming show barely on time. That same day I got a call saying one of my painted furniture pieces had sold in an adjacent shop, but that a bit of touch up was needed before it was delivered. I wasn't surprised - as the little red desk had been there for over a year! That's how slow sales are. So I loaded up my paintings, a variety of reds, glaze, topcoat, brushes, etc., and headed out for the forty mile drive. I dropped off the paintings, hurried to get to the shop before five, did the touch-up, picked up some Chinese food and headed home.

After dinner I was happy to have some new work for my blog - until I realized I'd forgotten to photograph the new paintings! And so forgive me for posting three of my personal favorites - paintings I've never been able to part with. Note that Black Bird was painted before my divorce - and subsequent name reclaim.
Would that explain how much I love the rain? Walking through the pine forest in a mist or fog I have often felt that time has stopped. I could be anyone in any hour of any day in this or another century. Everything slows down and I am able to focus on what is small and near and tangible - as that which is far away is softly obscured. Bark and leaves and textures, tiny branches, toadstools and fungi, droplets of water on my head - and sounds - sounds that are both muffled and magnified. The tapping of the water droplets, the sweet percussive sound of a runoff creek as it carries bits of the natural world down a fresh gravitational path.

If I am lucky, the tree frogs are singing - or I may chance upon a rabbit or doe rustling away into deeper cover. I love, too, the light after a rain, when the mist rises from warm earth seeming to carry the light up and hold it in place; a mist lit from within.

And then everything blooms!

My narcissus doesn't bloom every year. The drought and heat of the South cause undo stress - making me wait for well timed rains to bring it into full bursting glory.
Yes, I've been painting, but I post my commissioned works here - a pair of paintings for Mother's Day. So for further entertainment, here is the very undignified Gracie lounging atop my (formerly) clean laundry. No - she's not nursing kittens, she just has very fine short hair, rather like a Rex, on her pink and plump belly..
Over the decades of my life I've rescued or adopted many many cats. Gracie is unique in that she shows her joy and gratitude at being safe, loved and fed regularly. She is affectionate, sweet and loving all the time, and wants nothing more than to be a lap cat. Whoever dumped her there missed out on a very special feline.
I can't answer these question/s because I don't understand how else to be. I don't comprehend a negative. My head is filled with so many ideas and the world is just as full of materials, textures, colors and sensations as to be a constant source of inspiration. If I could live a dozen lifetimes I can't imagine that I would ever be bored, ever run out of things to make or do or think.
that is yours alone - but that can be shared with peers who understand

We are each unique. Our thoughts are our own to explore. We each have purpose and a hunger to create. Let's feed the hunger and turn it into purpose. Let's make something that would never have been...
After painting many "small" murals where there is some flexibility of design, I've settled into a process that is comfortable and flexible. (To me, small is less than 12' X 12'). Granted, there are times when one must reproduce an approved design exactly, but often the submitted mock-ups or proposals cannot render fine detail beyond overall design and color palette.
This mural was to be a landscape with a "step-into" effect (trompe l'oeil) utilizing an archway with columns as the framework. The clients desired a soft Impressionist style with dogwoods, rolling hills beyond a garden and a winding pathway.

Where'd that bench go?

This photo skips ahead quite a lot as I experienced camera focus failure
- a horrible malady that gets you when you delay examining photos
stored in your camera until it is too late. The background is blocked in as is much of the middle ground. You can see the painter's
tape employed for straight edges. You can also see that the bench has
disappeared. The painting was getting too busy on the left and with the
overlapping details to come, it would have been obscured.

Yes, the "stone" block floor is part of the mural. The client's furniture would be covering much of it, so details were "raised" by using this effect. The picture taped up center was to remind me to keep my hues from becoming too intense. I use dozens of references as I paint!! But in final stages, all are put away to allow personal style to come through (one hopes!).

Much work to do yet on the columns, stone floor and shadows, but more refinement here of the large Mimosa tree, rhododendron and finally - dogwood branches in foreground.
